Clarington, Ontario, Canada is a primary municipality of the Region of Durham in southern Ontario; it basks in the sunshine, cool breezes and brilliant blue waters of Lake Ontario. It is statistically considered part of the census area of metropolitan Oshawa and lies about 83 kilometers (52 miles) east of Toronto.

The city’s lakeside location, suburban conveniences and small town quaintness blend seamlessly together, giving Clarington a warm, inviting atmosphere.

 

Shopping and Dining

As mentioned earlier, the municipality of Clarington lies within the Greater Toronto Area, which just happens to be the most populous urban center in all of Canada. According to the census taken in 2006, more than 5 million people make this lovely, waterfront city their home.

Residents of Clarington, living only about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from this sprawling metropolis, have easy access to the vast, almost limitless shopping centers and restaurants inherent to an urban area of this size.

There are also a number of retailers, locally owned and operated specialty shops and unique, one-of-a-kind cafes and restaurants located in the city of Clarington itself.

A number of smaller communities are also part of the Clarington municipality, including Bowmanville, Courtice, Newcastle and Orono. Each of these unique areas offer quaint, comfortable, home-cookin’ cafes, and a treasure trove of antique shops, along with roadside farmers’ markets overflowing with freshly picked fruits, vegetables and other tasty delights.

Parks and Recreation

The Municipality of Clarington’s Community Services Department manages, administers and facilitates the recreation services and programs. Such as:
  • Aquatics: indoor and outdoor swimming lessons, recreational public swimming, lifesaving classes and adult programs.
  • Fitness: aerobics classes, squash facilities and fully equipped fitness training equipment.
  • Recreation: general recreation programs for all ages and skill levels.


Living

From the apple blossoms in the spring to the corn mazes and pumpkin patches in the fall, Clarington is loaded with good ol’ country atmosphere. The city’s proud heritage can be seen in many of its majestic vintage homes, marinas and waterfront parks.

Clarington’s government consists of an elected municipal council, with a mayor, four local ward councilors and two regional councilors.

The major employers for residents in Clarington include General Motors in Oshawa, a variety of manufacturing plants and the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. There are also a large number of Clarington’s residents who commute into Toronto for work.

Schools, Health, Transportation

The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board manages the public education in Clarington, while the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board serve the Catholic education needs of the municipality.

The Lakeridge Health Corporation is the governing body of hospitals in Clarington, as well as the nearby towns of Oshawa, Whitby and Scugog.

Clarington’s location allows for convenient access to Provincial Highways 401, and 35/115, along with CP Rail lines and the GO Rail service.
