Brooklin, Ontario Real Estate and Community Info.

The Town of Brooklin, Ontario, Canada, is actually considered a part of the Corporation of the Town of Whitby. These interconnected communities lie about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of the major metropolitan center of Toronto.

Even though Brooklin is so close to downtown Toronto, the surrounding countryside is mostly rural. Its population has been progressively rising since the 1990s and in 2006, the estimated number of residents was 15,350.

This unique blend of rural, small town atmosphere with many of the urban conveniences found in much larger cities is perhaps the biggest reason Brooklin has become such a desirable community in which to live.

Shopping and Dining

In addition to being a short half hour drive to Toronto and all of the shopping and dining options available in that city’s urban and suburban areas, the Town of Brooklin is also home to an impressive number of retail establishments and restaurants.

Here you will find health and beauty shops, home décor and furniture stores, and an eclectic mix of unique specialty shops and services. And one of the Toronto area’s finest dining experiences can be enjoyed at Brooklin’s own Corrado’s Restaurant and Bar. Corrado’s serves primarily Italian cuisine in an upscale, yet casual atmosphere.

When you’re seeking some one-stop shopping, you’ll have no trouble finding what you’re looking for at the nearby Whitby Mall. There are more than 50 retailers and eateries in this mall, including nationally recognized stores like Staples, Business Depot and, of course, McDonalds.

Parks and Recreation

The Recreation Division of the Town of Whitby is responsible for the development, design and administration of recreational programs and classes for happy citizens of Whitby and Brooklin of all ages and abilities. It also manages the area’s numerous athletic and recreational facilities.

One such facility is the 240,000 square foot Iroquois Park Sports Centre (IPSC) Nestled comfortably on 50 acres of pristine parkland in the Town of Whitby, IPSC is the largest municipal recreation and sports complex in all of Canada.

This amazing facility houses six arenas, two swimming pools and a 600-seat café. And outside you will find four softball fields, a skateboard park, six tennis courts, and much, much more.

There are also a number of golf courses, neighborhood parks and a conservation area in the communities of Brooklin and Whitby.

Living

Brooklin was founded in 1840. At that time, it was given the name Winchester. It kept that moniker until 1847, when someone found out that another Ontario town had laid claim to the Winchester name first. So, the name was changed to Brooklin.

The city today is primarily a commuter community, with many of its residents working in Toronto or another of that city’s suburbs. Among the chief employers in Brooklin are Brooklin Concrete Products and Fresh Co. food store.

Brooklin puts on several community events throughout the year, including the Brooklin Spring Fair, which has been part of the town’s fabric since 1913.

Schools, Health, Transportation

There are six elementary schools in the Brooklin area, as well as three high schools. Many of these schools are actually located in Whitby.

Brooklin and Whitby have several top-notch health care centers nearby from which to choose, including Lakeridge Health Whitby, Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering General Hospital and the North Whitby Medical Centre.

Ontario Highway 7 runs east and west along Brooklin’s south side. Motorists can take this highway to the northeastern edge of suburban Toronto, where it hooks up with Highway 407.

The main thoroughfares serving Brooklin are the GO Rail service to Toronto, as well as CN Railways, and Durham Region Transit.

The Town of Whitby is also host to a 430-berth recreational marina called Whitby Harbour.
